Mulled wine has been around since medieval times, when the spices were probably originally used to mask the flavour of poor quality alcohol. The Nordic glogg and German Gluhwein date back as far as the 15th century, but in the UK it was the famous Mrs Beeton who first recorded her recipe for mulled wine in 1869.
Trust me this is one of the easiest to make wine recipe I’ve ever known.
1 bottle of red wine
75g of caster sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange, zested
1 star anise
- Place everything into a pan and gently heat until the sugar has dissolved
- Cook for around 10 minutes being sure not to let it boil, as this will burn off the alcohol
- Serve straight away
